The private plane was amazing with its light leather seats, small galley, and bathroom. It was significantly larger than the one we had chartered to Vail last year. Even with the large cabin and multiple seats, the plane was packed with us plus the security team and staff.

To my surprise Chase let me have the window of our row of seats. Once we were situated Chase clasped my hand, summoned the stewardess over and ordered two bourbons on the rocks. While we waited for our drinks Chase took the free moment to chat with the man sitting across the aisle from him, and I stared out the window watching the activity on the tarmac. The crew below was busy getting us ready to take off; mindlessly watching them took my mind off everything, allowing a short reprieve from my endless stream of thoughts.

“Here.” Chase wrapped my hand around the highball glass and lifted it to my lips, forcing me to take a drink. “This will take the edge off.”

The bourbon burned as it flowed along my tongue and down my throat. I gagged but kept the drink down; I did need it to take the edge off before Chase noticed my despondency. I stared at the tarmac once again, thoughts drifting. What was Weston doing? What was he thinking? What had he done the moment Chase and I left? He seemed calm but there was no way he actually was.

Mindlessly I took another sip. The trial was over. But instead of celebrating with Weston by not leaving the bed for days, I was stuck playing girlfriend with Chase. Maybe Weston had reached out. I glanced at Chase who was deep in conversation, and dug my phone out of my purse. With a nonchalant shift in my seat I angled my body so he couldn’t read my screen if he happened to glance over.
